As a former military brat, I am a firm believer that no one should even be forced to be around the military, much less serve in it.

That reminds me---"integration" and "desegregation" were often used interchangeably, but were certainly not synonymous. Here, "assimilation" seems more like the right word.

A McCainesque character on "Top Gun" would have to have been nicknamed "Crash" or "Tailspin". The character that did crash, "Goose", by dint of his nickname was clearly the object of homoerotic physical bullying.

but not before he blew up the USS Forrestal. That was BTW the worst damage done to an American aircraft carrier since WW2, and since(hurricanes and terrrrrist attacks included). BTW he hopped on a Marine Corps Helicopter that was evacuating wounded (without orders or permission of any kind), while the Forrestal was still burning, and went on a (presumably unauthorized) drinking bender that wound up in Monaco.

And there is the big mistake. The Romans knew perfectly well that you need to have your provincial conscripts / mercenaries stationed in provinces other than the one they came from, preferably on the other side of the Empire. Otherwise they just take all your weapons, training, and money to use against you.
